Materials List

  • Wood slice ornament by Walnut Hollow
  • Pencil
  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint in black, red, white and yellow
  • Flat brush
  • Detail brush
  • Pink or red colored pencil
  • Ribbon or twine (optional)

Instructions:

Note: If you purchase premade wood slice ornaments from Walnut Hollow, they're already smooth, sanded and ready to go. These ornaments are pre-drilled, and they come in several wood varieties with a jute string to complement its rustic charm. If you are not using Walnut Hollow, you might need to wipe the wood with sandpaper to make sure the surface is smooth and even for the paint. And if you're having difficulty drawing your penguin, check out this How to Draw a Penguin tutorial, or print out an image from the internet and trace it onto the wood slice using tracing paper.

  1. Draw your penguin shape on the wood slice. Paint the inside of the penguin white.

  2. Once you have painted the center of the penguin white, paint the exterior of the body black.

  3. If you don't like the way it's looking, you can repaint it.

  4. Draw on the scarf, eyes, and beak.

  5. Find a ribbon or string to use as a tie on if you do not want to use the jute cording that comes with the ornament.

  6. Add details with a detail brush.

  7. Use the colored pencil to lightly make circles on the face of the snowman for rosy cheeks. Use your finger or a cotton swab to blend the marks into a circle.

A painted penguin wood slice ornament is the perfect gift for your loved ones. And if you'd rather keep this ornament for yourself, your Christmas tree will shine a little brighter! This is so cute. Who doesn't love penguins? The grand kids will love this one. I read thru the directions and it's so easy it would be a shame not to make it. I have all the materials I need to make it so next weekend my grand daughter and I will get to work.
