In the Designer's Words: "Repurpose those glass jars into primitive lanterns with Mod Podge, instant coffee granules, masking tape, and some annealed wire to hang it by. To make a primitive lantern first start with a clean jar, then tape off one side of the jar with the painters tape placing the tape edges together and making it just a little larger then you want your star to be. Great way to keep those glass jars out of the land fills and add a little primitive charm for those late evening around the patio. "

Mason jar crafts are the perfect way to add trend and vintage hints to your home at the same time. DIY lanterns like this rustic DIY idea can really add homey touches to your world. This Primitive Mason Jar Lantern is created out of one Mason jar and some surprising materials. Lovely and simple, you will love placing a lit tea light (or a battery operated one) in its center as it glows in your home. Consider making several of these to light an outdoor walkway or porch area.

  1. To make a primitive lantern first start with a clean jar.

  2. Then tape off one side of the jar with masking tape by placing the tape edges together and making it just a little larger then you want your star to be.

  3. Draw your star onto the tape using a star pattern.

  4. Now use your X-Acto knife and cut around the star.

  5. Gently remove the tape around the star, leaving the star in place.

  6. Mix up about a 1/4 cup of mod podge with 1 teaspoon of instant coffee. If you want darker add more and lighter add less coffee.

  7. Paint the outside of your jar with the mod podge coffee mixture leaving the star in place.

  8. Once dry remove the star, and using your X-Acto knife you can clean any rough edges.

  9. Add wire around the rim of the jar and add a handle to hang by.

  10. Place a battery operated LED tealight inside and now you have a primitive lantern.
