Free Crochet Face Mask Pattern

This is one more way we can all do our part to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and flatten the curve. There are many ways you can make your own homemade face mask, and crocheters will find this pattern a wonderful option. Protect the vulnerable and yourself with this crochet surgical mask pattern.
From the Designer: "Very recently I was diagnosed with asthma. Over the last two days, I have crocheted a face mask made from cotton thread. It is adjustable and I think it would be helpful and will help people feel comfortable in this fearful time."
Crochet HookF/5 or 3.75 mm hook, H/8 or 5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Finished SizeFor adults. One size fits most.
- Lily Sugar n'Cream or other cotton yarn. Using cotton yarn is the best for people with asthma or lung conditions because they can still breathe, and the cotton is best for rewashing.
- Crochet hooks in sizes H and F.
Ch 21, turn.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and across. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: 2 hdc in 1st st, hdc across. Ch 2, turn.
Rows 3-8: repeat row 2.
Row 9: 8 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 6 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 8 hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 10: repeat row 9.
Row 11: 9 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 7 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 9 hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 12: 10 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 8 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 10 hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 13: repeat row 12.
Row 14: 9 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 9 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 9 hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 15: 8 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 8 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 8 hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Sc tight around perimeter of face mask. Fasten off.
Tissue Holder (Inside Mask)
Ch 21, fasten off leaving a tail.
Position the two inside straps far enough inside the mask to cover your nose and mouth. (See photo.) The designer tied the top in a knot and left the bottom open until later step (see end of pattern).
Take 2 4" cuts and weave as close to the side as you can. When you tie to your head, you'll pull these side cuts so that the mask is taut to your face. Tie them and you can cut extra off.
Using a size F hook, attach yarn to corner and ch 66. Fasten off.
Repeat for each corner of the mask.
Once straps are completed, adjust the tissue holder on the inside and tie off.
