Mary Gaines

Mary GainesI am a crafter from beautiful Whidbey Island, Washington and truly enjoy making handmade gifts for family and friends, and to share with others. I honestly have been creating handmade crafts for over 30 years now and it just keeps getting better. My other passion is photography and getting to travel in our RV with my dear husband. We are nature photographers and enjoy staying at state parks where wildlife and sunsets abound.

I am also a mother of three amazingly talented adults and a grandmother to 9 beautiful and gifted grandchildren. Creativity runs in my family that is for sure. All three of my children are natural artists, drawing doesn’t come so naturally for me I am afraid, but painting does. That creative side is always driving me to try a different craft or idea, it’s so addicting. My other loves are knitting, crocheting, watercolor and oil painting. I have also created some very unique and contemporary inspirational plaques with our art and photography combined with scripture, they are quiet beautiful and inspiring. God has blessed us with so much beauty here in the Pacific Northwest, then when combined with his words of wisdom, well a masterpiece emerges.

My newest project is my cross stitch patterns that I have designed from my art and photography. I enjoy cross stitching while I watch a television program, because it’s very relaxing. When this idea came to me to create patterns from my artwork, well I really got excited. I also plan to share some “free” patterns to feature at favecrafts in the near future, so be sure to check them out.

Writing is another love of mine, sharing my ideas and patterns and my life’s experiences as well as the photography we capture in our travels. Our latest trip was to Alaska for a month and I simply cannot wait to share that truly amazing adventure with the world.

What really got me hooked on crafting was when I would give one of my handmade gifts to a family member that I love dearly, that smile on their face is forever engraved in my heart, to me that is simply “priceless”. Happy Crafting!

I want to make the slippers for my grandsons but would like to know how I can change the pattern to fit them. They are 3 5 years old.

Hi plbhutt, I suggest finding a pattern that would better suit your needs than updating the baby slippers pattern. We have a whole collection here: Hope that helps! Kaylee, Editor of FaveCrafts

this slippers are in the works.. but i was wondering about the toe shaping.. i did not see a decrease in stitches in the 2 rows .. is there something missing here or do you just continue with the same amount of stitches ?

Hi there, I have contacted the designer and will let you know the answer as soon as possible. Thanks! - Julia from FaveCrafts

Hi there, here is a response from Mary - "Just keep knitting until you tie off. The toe is shaped by pulling the yarn tightly at the end. - this creates the toe shape. You just knot the yarn and weave through or cut off." Hope that helps! - Julia from FaveCrafts

Love these slippers and Yes my grandmother use to make these for us each year. I was wondering how can i make them smaller for my granddaughter? she is only 3. any suggestions?

What type/weight yarn is used in grandmas knitted slippers please. Thank you I'm a beginner knitter

What type of yarn is used in this pattern, grandmas knitted slippers. I'm a beginner. Thanks.

I want you to be aware of the fact that these slippers are an old workbasket pattern that I have made for years. I feature them on my website I received permission from the publishing company of workbasket to feature them and all workbasket patterns on my website.

Hello Crafter 8543137, I was taught to make these slippers back in the 1970's by my mother in law - plus I have changed a few things. I never saw any pattern she just taught these from memory.......:)

I noticed on the pattern for Grandma'a Knitted Slippers that the brown pair has a checkered insole. The pattern does not mention that. How do I get the same insole as pictured on the pattern?
