Beginning Crochet: Part 3

There are four basic stitches in crochet. You can create an entire item from single crochet, the easiest of all crochet stitches, but it won’t look very interesting!

Single Crochet (sc)- This is the most basic crochet. Insert your hook into the second stitch in your chain stitch. Yarn over and pull back through the chain stick. You will now have TWO loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull the yarn through both loops. This is a single crochet stitch. The hook is placed through the second stitch only for the first row and in the first in the following. Yay! We can crochet! Here’s a video for single crochet stitch.

Half Double Crochet (hc)- Now we are getting a little fancier. Yarn over and stick your hook through the third chain stitch (Again, this for the first row only. Stick your hook through the first stitch for subsequent rows). YO again and pull through. Now with three loops on your hook, YO again and pull through. Here’s a video again!

Double Crochet (dc)- Yarn over and stick your hook through the fourth chain stitch. YO and pull through. YO again and pull through the first two loops on your needle. YO again and pull through the last two loops. If you double crochet every stitch, it will be a very tight weave; double crochet every other stitch for a looser weave. Here’s a video to demonstrate double crochet.

Triple Crochet (tc)- Now we are just showing off. For this crochet, yarn over TWICE and then stick your hook into the fifth stitch. YO and pull through. YO again and draw it through the first two loops on the hook. Repeat this process two more times until all the loops are off the chain! Again, use tc every other stitch for a loser stitch. Another video might help you out!

Ok, so I can crochet a line. Now what?

Do you show how to do a hdc (half double crochet). Sounds like a single crochet, but I know that can't be right. Thanks.

Really found it easy to follow along with the videos. Found the videos very useful thanks

Hi asbeads 1848840 - I would suggest checking out the following link - there are a ton of great tutorials for left-handed individuals.

So far I love all the videos, but my complaint is where is instructions for left handed people. I can watch your videos, but I have to figure it out on how to do it left handed. From experience, I reverse what I see to do the stitches, but it would be great to actually see it done for a left handed person.

Thank you for posting this. I found it quite easy to follow :)

Create a striped knee rug with woven strips of chain crochet! Crochet a knee rug using rows of single crochet in colours of your choice. In the first and every subsequent row, create gaps every few inches by omitting one single crochet and replacing with one chain, eg sc over 10 stitches, miss one stitch, chain one, sc over next 10 stitches. On the knee rug is complete, you will see you will have several lines of holes running vertically. Create lengths of chain and weave these into these lines, the ends of these chains may either be left to hang loose or may be tied off and woven into the blanket to be invisible. Simple but very effective and a stunning project for a beginner.

I find these videos quite good....the slow motion enables you to follow along.....I was able to pick it up after the first time....I had learned many years ago but only knew one stich and pattern....very good !

Again there are no pictures here to help guide me.

Thank you SOO much! I just learned how to crochet, and I only knew the double crochet, and it DID get very boring. Thanks again!

I have been looking for years for info on how to crochet! And I do mean years!!! This is the first I've found that I can actually understand. Thank you so much!

I need to know if anybody out there knows how block a crochet patern afther it done?

I am left handed and these are very diffacult for me tofollow Is there left handed instructions

These videos and the instructions are perfect!

I have gone through parts 1 and 2. Now when I get to part 3, it says the videos have been removed. Will they be coming back? When and Where?

Does it matter if you push your needle through like they are in the video or pulling it through? (going over everything then grabing the next chain, where as they are pushing through the next chain)

Crafter 14886. A SC2TOG is a single crochet decrease stitch. For instance, if you have 10 chains in the last row and now you need only nine, you will need to decrease the number of stitches in the row you are working on. To do this, you will have your last stitches on your hook, insert your hook in the next stitch or stitch called for, yarn over and pull up a loop(do not pull through), next you put the hook in the next stitch and pull up a loop and then you yarn over and pull the thread through all stitches on the hook which should be three. By doing this, you eliminated one stitch when you pulled the thread through all three stitches on the hook.

i'm a beginner. but do i really need certain hooks to do certain crochets?

This video was great as I was unsure how to do the double! and these video's make it very clear........Thank You PS. wish you would fet some on candle making, it would probably make it alot simpliar for me?? can't wait to watch the next video! !!!! THANK YOU, FROM MUSKEGON,MI.

Thank you for the best Crochet Lessons ever! I've wanted to learn but have never seen it demonstrated so well. I'm 50 and now I can crochet!!!!!

I found this video excellent. I have always wanted to learn but never found anyone with the patience to teach me. Thanks again!!

This is a great stitch tutorial. I always did these stitches but until I saw them done I didnt realize that I was doing a few of them wrong! Thanks !! It was so easy to watch it in slow speed so that not a move was missed! Keep on now with some of the harder ones like shell and puff or stitches like that and I will be a happy camper. I would especiall like to know how to do hairpin crochet. I just love it but cant figure it out! xoxo

These videos are very good and helpful to me. Long time since I have crochet and I was not sure of myself. Thank you All questions should be showned here. Keeping in file.

Thanks so much for these videos I can crochet now .

I loved all 4 deminstrations I found them very helpful. I have saved them so I can go back and follow along with the recording at my leasure. Thank You

I made a baby blanket doing an afghan stitch. My friend told me I could put an edging on it using double crochet. Since I haven't crocheted in a long time, I needed a refresher on crocheting. I looked at several websites and didn't find them helpful. I got an email today from Favecrafts and when I opened it there was a link to "basic crocheting". Now I have the courage to do the edging around the blanket. Thank you!

I always knew how to single crochet but not double or triple. Thanks to these videos I can better understand hoe to make them and can do more projects. Thanks so much.

I have always wanted to crochet and never have understood it in books. I have bought several. The instructions you have online are very helpful! I have started a project and it actually looks like something. I will continue to use your site. Thanks so much for sharing.
