The editors of FaveCrafts are posting this on behalf of Connie,

I have crocheted for many years, but every time I try a ripple afghan I always end up with too many sts on the ends. I follow the instructions start with say 6 dc, then the point, then 6 dc, then skip 2 sts and begin again, I always have extra sts on either end when I turn my work. I started a ripple afghan the other day and I had several rows on it when I realized I had extra sts on both ends. UGH!

Can you help?

When you turn and chain 3 to start, do you skip the first stitch? If you crochet into that first stitch you will be adding a stitch as you say everytime. It will look like a hole but make sure you skip the first stitch after turning. Try Lion Brand site for good instruction videos under the 'Learning Center' (I can't post links yet or I would have) Happy Crocheting and Merry Christmas all, Cathy

Yes, it is always the norm that the turning chain replaces the first dc stitch. It is also important to remember that the last dc goes into the top of the turning chain of the previous row! Since you are a newby to ripples, I would also suggest that you check your increases and decreases when you finish each row as this can really mess up the stitch count. I have been crocheting for many years -- but when I do a ripple I always count the stitches between the "peaks" and "valleys" -- this saves time in the long run! Take your time and you will complete a masterpiece!

You must remember that the beginning 6 double crochets are also the ending stitches per row. If this is not what you do, you will end with extra stitches. Hope this helps. I also do the ripple afghan in baby blankets and have done quite a fw. They are loely. Your pettern may not tell you to do telast 6 dc and that is where it is wrong. You might want to add that to your pattern,( I have had to do that to a pattern that is miss printed sometimes) Good luck and enjoy.
