Materials List

  • Computer paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Pen (optional)

  1. Start with a square piece of paper. If your paper is rectangular, cut it down to a square shape.

  2. Fold diagonally so you wind up with a triangle.

  3. Take the bottom left point of your isosceles triangle and fold along the upper righthand side as shown.

  4. Flip the paper over, and repeat this step on the other side, lining up the folds as well as possible. The goal is a symmetrical snowflake!

  5. Fold the whole shape in half along the middle, lining up the points.

  6. (Optional): Draw cutouts with pen and mark X's where the paper will fall away.

  7. Cut out the areas you marked in pen, or if you didn't do this step, simply eyeball and cut the shapes! The great thing is you don't really know what your snowflakes will look like until you open them up.

Adorable! I have so many memories of making these in school as a kid )

I have made cut snowflakes for many years, and after a while I got pretty designs by really cutting a lot of the paper away. But I folded the square paper differently and it didn't work well, with bulky paper, so I will have to try this folding technique which seems much better! For added fun, you can sprinkle some glitter in with diluted glue or add glow in the dark paint! Thanks for sharing!

I have learned something here. I have learned that there is a certain formula for folding your paper to get these amazing snowflake shapes! How pretty these would be using printed scrapbook papers...they make papers in vintage and retro style prints, embossed solids, and fun polka dots and stripes! If you chose a variety of papers in both prints and solids, you could create garland, too. Or, turn the snowflakes into ornaments for your tree!
