Do a gauge swatch of the pattern stitch, casting on 21 stitches. Start with- 5. Row 1 and work all 7 rows until you have 5 in. Measure the stitches in the center 4 in of the swatch. As an example, lets say you get exactly 16 stitches, so 4 st/in is your gauge. Measure the child from waist to neck or use this chart. http://www.fibergypsy.com/common/children.shtml Let's say child measures 12 in, so you cast on 12x4 or 48 stitches +1 (the pattern repeat is 5 and original pattern cast on 5X9=45+1). How many rows? You can customize by measuring the girl across the shoulders and down the arms or use the chart. Let's say you want a length for the rectangle of 11 in (this is the across back measurement from the chart) plus 2 in on each end of the rectangle to cover the top of each arm, or 15 in. Work the pattern until you are 1 in from the end,(end with a row 1 or row 5 in the pattern) 14 inches in this example, then knit 1 in of ribbing. Caution, since this pattern does NOT include a gauge, if you knit loosely like I do, you could end up with a totally different size than the pattern writer did. You can't just add stitches without working a gauge swatch.

Important correction for previous reply: The cast on must be the nearest multiple of 5 +1. In my example, the cast on should be 12 X4= 48 with the nearest multiple of 5 being 50 then add 1. This is so each pattern for the polka dots is complete. With a child, I would always go up to the next multiple of 5.

As an example, lets say you get exactly 16 stitches, so 4 st/in is your gauge. Measure the person from waist to neck or use this chart. http://www.fibergypsy.com/common/women.shtml Let's say measurement is 17.5 in, so you cast on 17.5x4 or 70 stitches +1 (the pattern repeat is 5 and original pattern cast on 5X9=45+1 so whatever the number of stitches it must be able to be divided by 5). How many rows? You can customize by measuring the girl across the shoulders and down the arms or use the chart. Let's say you want a length for the rectangle of 17 in (this is the across back measurement from the chart) plus 3 in on each end of the rectangle to cover the top of each arm, or 23 in. Work the pattern until you are 1 in from the end,(end with a row 1 or row 5 in the pattern) 22 inches in this example, then knit 1 in of ribbing. did. You can't just add stitches without working a gauge swatch.
