Primary TechniqueGlass Crafts

Easy

Materials

  • Clear square-shaped glass bottle, e.g. an old incense aromatherapy bottle
  • Gold and black resin cameo
  • 30mm wide silver decorative metal lace
  • Acrylic paint in the following two colors: watermelon (bright pink) and pale gold
  • Liquid black shoe polish
  • Paintbrush
  • Standard scissors
  • Super Glue
  • Quick-drying matt spray varnish
  • Hot glue gun and glue stick

Instructions

  1. Wash the bottle and allow to dry upside down overnight. If necessary, use mineral turpentine to remove any glue residue from where the label was stuck.

  2. Use the paintbrush to dab a thin, uneven layer of watermelon paint all over the bottle. Apply paint all the way up to the top lip of the bottle, but do not paint the base of the bottle. Allow to dry thoroughly.

  3. Apply a single coat of the black shoe polish in random areas, allowing it to dry before continuing with the next step.

  4. Now use the paintbrush again to apply a single coat of the pale gold paint in random areas and allow to dry thoroughly.

  5. To protect the paint, spray a layer of quick-drying matt spray varnish over the bottle and allow to dry thoroughly.

  6. Now give the metal lace an aged look:

    • Use the paintbrush to dab pale gold and watermelon paint on random areas of the lace.

    • Add shoe polish to random areas and allow to dry.

    • Spray the lace with a layer of varnish and allow to dry.

  7. Cut four strips that would fit around the heel of the bottle and use Super Glue to affix each strip to the bottle.

  8. Use the glue gun and glue stick to add a thin layer of glue to fill the gap where two strips meet each other. Once the glue has dried, add a dash of pale gold paint to the glue strips to conceal them.

  9. Use Super Glue to glue the cameo in place.

  10. Finish it off with another coat of spray varnish.

This antique bottle turned out so super cool.Who would have known it would be so easy to make. It looks like it belongs to an old era. I would have never thought to use black shoe polish to give it that aged era. And the painting of the bottle so brilliant. Never tried this before but I will because I love the way they turned out. someone else have a picture of one they did?
