Updated January 20, 2021

Talk about going green! Transform sturdy bags made from recycled materials into storage bags for fruit and vegetables in this tutorial from Jenya of MyEvaForeva. Easy to make and washable, these bags make going green simple.

Fruit and Veggie bag recycled from bird seed bag

  • Heavy-duty recycled plastic bag, such as a bird seed bag
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

  1. Wash your bag.

  2. Cut your rectangular. I cut out two. (Mine were about 8" x 14" and 13" x 24".)

  3. Turn the very edge of the upper line out facing the right side. (Note: The inside of the bird seed bag will be the oustide of the finished bag.) Fold two sides together and sew them together (wrong sides facing inside).

  4. Fold your tube so the seam is in the middle.

  5. Then push the side middle parts to the inside (like in the photo) so they are right near the seam.

  6. Sew along that edge.

  7. Turn the bag right side out and shape it to take a form of a cylinder.

Tip: These bags are machine washable.

I would never have thought to create these recycled fruit and veggie bags. The next time I have the need to purchase this type of item I will remember to retain the bag and make these. Thanks for the diy pattern for this fruit and veggie bag.

Great idea. I can see modifying this project to make reusable grocery bags. By using the more durable material, these will last a while and because it is a means of recycle the longer time that you get to use it is way better than throwing them in the trash.

What a practical, idea! Many times I do think that a bag is worth saving and this project does give It a new life and is very well is would be a nice project for school age kids to try to assemble and use at school for various things, even for school lunches! Thank you for sharing such a fun and practical idea!

Brilliant. It's like an inside out bag. I would never have thought that a bird seed bag would hold up to becoming a sewn bag. I am trying to go green more and more each day and with tutorials like this it helps remind us of the different ways we can recycle for crafts.Anyone make one yet?

This is great, going to try.

This is a very green way to go shopping!

There are just so many things that are so right about this project ! I can't wait to go buy more bird seed now. It's good for the birds, thrifty and durable too.

Be sure that the bag you use is of food-grade plastic. Not all plastics are safe for food.

Thanks for this project - I have been looking for an alternative to the plastic bags the grocery stores insist on using for produce. I have brought in my cloth bags, but they are always too large for what I'm gathering. Weighting can be a hassle too when they remove the produce fromt he bag and put it ont he dirty scales - yuck!
