Primary TechniqueWood Crafts

  • Blank wooden plaque for this project, a plaque sized 12” x 4.6” was used
  • Acrylic paint in the following colors: white, powder blue, light green, plum and antique bronze
  • 2” sized laser cut wooden letters for this project, the word PEACE was used
  • 1” wide metal lace
  • 10/32 paint brush
  • Clear-drying gel glue (such as Bostik Clear Gel)
  • Quick-drying clear matt spray varnish
  • 220 grit sanding paper
  • Standard scissors
  • Candle and box of matches
  • Old cloth
  • Newspapers to protect the working area
  • Screws or adhesive glue to affix the plague to the wall

  1. Sandpaper the top of the plaque thoroughly and dust well with a dry cloth.
  2. Age the plaque with the candle’s smoke. Light the candle and bring the candle closer to the plaque. Drag the candle all along the plaque in a circular motion. You will see darker shapes forming on the surface of the plaque. Do not hold the candle too close to the plaque.

  4. Repeat the aging technique with the candle’s smoke, and then sandpaper the plaque again to partially remove some of the paint.
  5. Apply single coats of the powder blue and light green acrylic paint in random areas, one at a time, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next color.

  6. Cut a strip from the metal lace that would fit onto the bottom of the plaque. Apply the gel glue to the back of the metal lace and glue it onto the plaque. Weigh down the lace with a heavy book until the glue has dried.
  7. Give the letters an uneven wash first with the white paint, and then with the plum and antique bronze paints to give the letters an aged look.
  8. Glue the letters onto the plaque and allow to dry thoroughly.
  9. Spray the front of the plaque with the varnish and allow to dry. Remember to work in a well-ventilated area when using the varnish.
