Ho Ho Holiday Afghan

This simple Ho Ho Holiday Afghan is a great way to help you count down the days until Christmas!  Get started on this afghan in the spring or summer to make sure it's ready to go come Christmas time.  Not ready for Christmas quite yet?  Use this pattern and a different colored yarn to create a lovely afghan for any time of year.

Ho Ho Holiday Afghan


  • 2 skeins Red Heart Classic yarn in White
  • 4 skeins Red Heart Classic yarn in Jocky Red
  • 4 skeins Red Heart Classic yarn in Paddy Green
  • 2 skeins Herrschners Holiday yarn in Christmas Multi
  • 5.0mm (US H-8) crochet hook, or size needed for gauge
  • Yarn Needle
  • Placement Diagram


Gauge:  Square measures  7” x 7”

Ho Ho Holiday afghan

Afghan Measures:  44” x 50”

Squares:  (Make 21 red and 21 green)

  1. Row 1 (RS):  With green or red ch 25, 3 dc in 5th ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch, repeat from * across, dc in last ch, ch 1 and turn.
  2. Row 2:  Sc in first st, *ch 2, skip 3 dc, sc between 3rd and 4th dc, repeat from * across, sc in last st, ch 3 and  turn.
  3. Row 3:  3 dc in each ch 2 space across, dc in last st, ch 1 and turn.
  4. Rows 4-11:  Repeat Rows 2 and 3.


Square Edging

  1. With white starting at upper right corner work along top edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in first dc, *ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc between 3rd and 4th dc, repeat from * across, (sc, ch 3, sc) in last corner dc.
  2. Work along side edge *ch 3, sc in sc row, repeat from * across, (sc, ch 3, sc) in first bottom ch.
  3. Work along bottom edge *ch 3, sc in ch 2 sp, repeat from * across, (sc, ch 3, sc) in last ch.
  4. Work along side edge *ch 3, sc in sc row, repeat from * across, join to beginning sc and fasten off.


Joining of Squares

  1. With Christmas multi whip stitch squares together sewing every 2nd stitch and making a loop when sewing scs together.  Whip stitch rows together sewing every 2nd stitch, making a loop when sewing scs and joinings together.  See Color Placement Diagram


Afghan Edging

  1. With Christmas multi work along top edge, 3 dc in corner ch 3 space, *ch 3, sc in next ch 3 space, ch 3, 3 dc in next ch 3 space, continue from * across working in each ch 3 space and in seam joining, ending ch 3, 3 dc in corner ch 3 space, continue pattern around entire blanket, join to beg dc and fasten off.

I like the stitches used in this afghan. It is made of big blocks, red alternating with green. The stitches are easy and fast to make. I cannnot wait to do this project.

I love this pattern. I've seen it referred to as "Box stitch" and I've used it for several projects. It's kind of a take off from the traditional granny but gives a more solid fabric which holds it's shape nicer than a granny (which I always find stretches a lot). Very nice. . .
